Flower Power Audience Analysis

The photographer behind the photo, Bernie Boston was currently working for the LA Times Washington Star. Consequently, he intended the audience to be the readers of the LA Times Washington Star i.e. DC and surrounded area residents. The paper never published his photograph, instead he entered and become a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize. Consequently, his audience expanded to the citizens of the United States. Perhaps even more specifically, his audience became the cultured class of the United States, as the Pulitzer Prize is awarded based on cultural achievements. Artists, musicians, and journalists alike are likely to be more liberal so they would be likely to relate to the message of the young protester in the photo.

  1. Good analysis of the audience--what do you make of its rejection (?) by the Star?

  2. The photograph's rejection by the Star is a peculiar point in the photograph's story, especially because of its future cultural significance. Perhaps the paper's editor didn't see the importance of the photograph or maybe he thought that publishing the photo would have looked like the paper taking sides and he didn't want that.
