Aquarius Let the Sunshine In Appealing to Logos
The song Aquarius Let the Sunshine In basically lists exactly what the hippies would want in the world and I think that's a very logical way to get a point across. What do the hippies want to ultimately achieve? They want a new age of peace, in the song this is the age of Aquarius. What would be the main requirements of this new age of peace? Harmony, understanding, sympathy, and trust would all be key parts of this new age and it just so happens all of those ideas are explicitly listed in the song. The sunshine constantly mentioned in the song is a pretty obvious way of saying they want the peace come all around the world. The song does a very logical and straight forward job of getting right at what the hippies ultimately want. It's a little more straight forward than putting flowers into rifles but it ultimately supports the exact same idea of universal peace.

Interesting. I really like how this song can be read two ways: "Let the sunshine in" or "Let the sun shine in." Is there any difference in these readings?
ReplyDeleteI think your analysis was very spot on as to what the hippies were trying to say. They definitely made it seem like peace and harmony are simple ideas. I liked how you mentioned how the picture was not as straight forward. I actually think the photo is really powerful, and in a way, easier to understand than the lyrics. What do you think? Do you think one is a stronger argument for peace over he other?

I enjoyed how your analysis asked its own questions, forcing the reader to do some analysis him/herself. And to reply to Professor Bayly's question, I think one could interpret a difference between the two ways of reading the song. "Let the sunshine in" seems more to the point. As sunshine represents peace, people just have to accept peace and peace will do take away all other worries. "Let the sun shine in" seems like a more eventual event. I feel like once the sun shines in, it will take some adapting to to finally achieve peace.
