The photograph, Flower Power, establishes ethos through the style of dress the two parties are sporting. The visual credibility of the hippie, George Edgerly Harris, comes from his casual, almost boring, turtleneck, loosely fitted, either for comfort or lack of care. His hair is long, a sign that he does not conform to the social norm of the time. The police, the antagonists of the situation, are well dressed, well trimmed, equal. They come off boring in their own way. We catch a glimpse of the other protesters together with Harris, and we can see that they are all wearing different clothing. They're seen curiously looking at the action Harris is performing, making it look like Harris is their leader.
Meanwhile in Aquarius Let the Sun Shine In, Rado and Ragni establish ethos with powerful lyrics calling to action. This creates an idea in the listener's mind that the song's writers are leaders. They have the power to tell everyone to sing, and the skill to teach the listeners to be happy.

Flower Power/Aquarius Let the Sun Shine Kairos
The 1967 photograph, Flower Power, is easy to relate to across time. People, in particular, young people, have always had conflicts with authority figures, the police. However, at the heat of the movement for peace in Vietnam, this photograph may have had an even stronger effect. The flower was seen as a symbol of peace, and some of the negative stigma commonly now associated with the hippie movement had not developed. In 2014, the power of the message could be affected by the protester's weapon, the flower. The flower's message of peace has been undermined by its image as a feminine object. This brave man, George Edgerly Harris, could be critically perceived soft for his weapon of choice by today's public.
The song, Aquarius Let the Sun Shine, is telling the listener about the mythical Age of Aquarius. This concept is not very timely to the era, the astrological event of entering the Age of Aquarius is presumed to occur later. On the other hand, the positive energy the song produces is parallel to the positive energy surrounding the Flower Power movement. In line with the positive energy of the flower in the photo, the song creates a feeling that positive feelings will prevail.

Flower Power Delivery
The intended delivery for this photo was to be on a front page of a newspaper (Washington Star). The photo should have supported a title describing the event of the protest. The photo would enhance the reader's perception of the event, and perhaps even help sway opinion. The photo is somewhat confusing to the casual observer without knowing the extent of the anti-war movement in the US. Even so, the flower, is a universal sign of peace, while uniforms, helmets, and guns, are a universal sign of order. Perhaps, even without a caption the message of the photo would be clear, although traditionally, it would appear with a caption in a newspaper. Similarly, in the Pulitzer Prize a description is presented.
Flower Power Audience Analysis
The photographer behind the photo, Bernie Boston was currently working for the LA Times Washington Star. Consequently, he intended the audience to be the readers of the LA Times Washington Star i.e. DC and surrounded area residents. The paper never published his photograph, instead he entered and become a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize. Consequently, his audience expanded to the citizens of the United States. Perhaps even more specifically, his audience became the cultured class of the United States, as the Pulitzer Prize is awarded based on cultural achievements. Artists, musicians, and journalists alike are likely to be more liberal so they would be likely to relate to the message of the young protester in the photo.

Aquarius Let the Sunshine In Appealing to Logos
The song Aquarius Let the Sunshine In basically lists exactly what the hippies would want in the world and I think that's a very logical way to get a point across. What do the hippies want to ultimately achieve? They want a new age of peace, in the song this is the age of Aquarius. What would be the main requirements of this new age of peace? Harmony, understanding, sympathy, and trust would all be key parts of this new age and it just so happens all of those ideas are explicitly listed in the song. The sunshine constantly mentioned in the song is a pretty obvious way of saying they want the peace come all around the world. The song does a very logical and straight forward job of getting right at what the hippies ultimately want. It's a little more straight forward than putting flowers into rifles but it ultimately supports the exact same idea of universal peace.
Flower Power Style
For a candid, there is so much going on I this
picture but of course a professional can get that. As a close up, we get a more
intimate insight into the events of the protest yet the aerial view also gives
us distance. The first thing I noticed when I looked at Flower Power was the rifles.
They are the central point of the photograph, not the men. It took a minute to
realize that there were flowers inside the rifles. That image is so powerful. This
action emulates the theme of this photograph and the protest: peace over
violence. The contrast between the light and dark emphasizes what should be an
enmity. Light colors are often associated with good and dark colors with evil
which are always at odds. The flowers help bring the two sides together just as
peace will unite our world.
Flower Power Stasis Theory
The counterculture movement involved an emphasis on
peace, love, and end to war among other things. As the first televised war, the
Vietnam War shocked and horrified people across the country. This picture
entitled Flower Power depicts an antiwar protest held at the Pentagon. As in
many protest, law enforcement, in this case the National Guard, is called in to
subdue or get rid of protesters. This is usually the beginning of how protests
become massacres. However, the protesters’ response is not the typical one.
Instead of responding to force with violence, they reinforce the reason they
are there, to promote peace. This idea of peace was not deemed important enough
for newspaper. The photograph received recognition after the photographer,
Bernie Boston, entered it in contests.
